So you know how last week we gushed over the fics that have us smiling like fools and gigglesnorting with the lulz? Well, this week I’m gonna explore the opposite end of the spectrum. Let’s face it: there are days we just. want. to. cry. Call us emotional, call us hormonal, call us gluttons for punishment…whatevs! Sometimes you just need that cathartic cry. And I’m not talking about the angsty “oh no what’s gonna happen?!” kinda tears you might shed – no, no, no! – I’m talking flat out holy-god-in-heaven-i-think-i-might-die-from-the-physical-pain-I-feel-reading-this kinda tears. #masochisticficreader
Honestly, I’m a wimp. I normally can’t do stories without an HEA. Although I guess it depends on how you personally define that term, you probably won’t find one in these fics. But I do have some sympathy for you, my dear Angelz and h00rs: both of this week’s tearful recs are COMPLETE. At least your suffering will be short-lived! My kindness knows no bounds, right?

The first fic in the Spotlight is a collaboration between withthevampsofcourse and jandco called “Dear Isabella.” Good Lord! Just thinking about this story gets me all in knots. I can’t really share too much about the story or it will give the plot away. What I will say is that this story is well-written, reflective, and even though there might be some parts where you suspend your personal beliefs, it is nothing but utterly realistic. With the good and the bad, this story is as “real life” as it gets. It’s not for the weak of heart, but it’s worth your time. The ending left me sad, but hopeful. Like I’d just let out a deep breath I’d been holding in for a long, long time. #happysad
Summary: He said “always”. She wasn’t so sure. All-human. M for language. All the usual angst applies.

The second story in this week’s Spotlight seriously tried to kill me. #okaynotreally But I feel confident in stating that “Goodnight Noises Everywhere“ by the talented Feisty Y. Beden is like nothing you’ve ever read before. This story cut me deeply on a very personal level. It caused me to ponder my life, question my values, and, most importantly, be thankful for all of my blessings. If you’re a mushball like me and you cry every time you get to the end of the melodramatic movie “Deep Impact”– when the big ol’ wave is crashing down on the city and you know it’s the end — I think you’ll react to GNE the same way I did. Prepare thy Kleenex. That is all.
Summary: Bella is the only survivor of a virus which has killed off the human race. Is there anyone-anything-still alive on this dying planet? Entry for the Twilight 25 Challenge. Post-apocalyptic good times. Bella/Edward.

Dear God, this fic owned me…so freakin’ good. Not for those of you that can’t handle some serious heartache…(True masochistic fic reader here) I don’t always like my fics tied-up in bows and ribbons. Really, this is a beautifully written story regardless of the high heat break level.
The ending blew me away in that “infinite cold’. I was crying like a baby. I am not into the angst, but I had loved the Edward character in this story and had hope for them. JUST KILLED ME. I won’t say what happened, but GAH. wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh wahhhhhhhhhhhhh. I can’t handle angst. I am a WUSSPERV!
Awake in the Infinite Cold is absolutely, positively one of the BEST ff ever written! But you will need kleenex…not for anyone who likes light reading, fun, and fluff….nothing fluffy about this one. Very well written.

This is one of the best out there. Read it. It’s right there with Wide Awake and the others. Y’all know the ones I mean …EP, CWIA,etc.

I HIGHLY recommend it, though. It’s one of those stories that stick with you long after you finish it.
This is the ultimate tear-jerkert and non-HEA! I loved it and hated it all at the same time. I do agree it is up there with some of the best as far as how well-written it is; but def not in those categories due to the horrific ending. I bawled/sobbed like uncontrollably. I actually wish I hadn’t read it, but that’s just me…I don’t do HEA’s….there are enough of them in RL.

I’m not particularly into super angsty ones, but I think that’s more to do with my line of work, where I see it in real life than anything else. These are two absolutely fab recs, DD! First, for the “different” factor, second, for the truly wonderful writing both these fics contain. Ladies, even if you think you can’t do “angsty” fics, at least give both of these a try. You can always just stop reading if it gets to be to much. I can’t say enough about “Goodnight, Noises Everywhere” I could not wait for updates, and she just completed this, what…a week ago? I cried, because I just didn’t want this story to end. If you have a little sci-fi bone in your body like me (I also read Battlestar Galactica FF, but shhh, don’t tell Edward) this story will blow you away…really kept me guessing/wishing/hoping till the last chapter. Original concept from a great author. And “Dear Isabella”? I will NEVER forget that story. Even if they are angsty fics, the good ones always stick. Life isn’t always roses, and I like a fic that makes me run the whole gamut of emotions.(proud fic masochist here, lol)

I can’t not mention Lolashoe’s stories, Let Your Light Shine and A Life Extraordinary. They move me like no other story can. Even Stephenie couldn’t do any better with these characters. The latest in the series This Hungry World is near completion, and the last chapter had me holding my breath and trying to continue reading thru tears, just to get thru it. Despite all of that, I still consider her stories my happy place, because there is so much love expressed between these characters.

I don’t usually categorize them as “sad fics” b/c like you, they bring me to my happy place – I love what she did with the canon characters SO much that, to me, her stories ARE canon, ykwim? I totally agree, Lolashoes’ stories seem like canon to me as well. Even though Bella’s talent is slightly different from the original story, I still feel like Lola just picked up where Stephenie left off, but then takes them to a whole new level. Her characters have so much depth to them, and she surprises me in every chapter.
There are times when I really feel lucky to have found fan fiction, and her stories just make me feel blessed to get to read them for free. She is a truly talented writer.

Okay, I have to go out on a limb and rec one today. I don’t normally do a lot of recc’ing here because most everything I see I’ve either read or am currently reading. I will only rec something if it completely and totally knocks me on me arse.
With that being said, you must, must, MUST read Million Dollar Baby. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5983247/1/ Before you ask, no, it’s not titled in reference to a certain movie directed by a certain legendary actor & director. The title itself helms from the amount of money spent to “purchase” one Isabella Swan.
That in and of itself would lead you to believe that the story would lead you into the seedy underground world of sexual slavery, and at first it sort of does, but it leaves it behind with a quickness and takes a life of its own. I absolutely love Edward & Bella in this fic. I adore the power struggles between the two. It’s A-mazing to read.
I don’t want to give anything more away than that, but I will let you know this… I have been on a search for a well written, controlling & domineering Edward who takes no shit as well as a Bella who isn’t a mouse and I found it in this fic.
Do go read. Trust me.

Its the strangest thing, I can’t read angst. It destroys me, like leaves me inconsolable for about two weeks…CW&IA about killed me but I had to keep going coz he was so fuckhawt!
But yet, I can write angst easy peasy…I hate doing this but I must self pimp today since I updated my little fic last night. There are five chapters on ff.net and the first is awaiting validation on twilighted so I’m hoping it’ll be up there soon enough.

Dee, I’m dying that we’re twinners AGAIN. I’ve watched Deep Impact (title sounds dirty on RAoR) a gazillion times and I do cry every time, when the mom hands off her baby and then cries with relief. *sob* I love that movie so much, when my first son was a newborn and turned night nursing into a marathon sport I watched it over and over. God I’m so weird.
OMG it’s really starting to freak me out with the Twinners stuff, Deb! How bizzarro!! I cry incessantly at that part in the movie, too…I’m seriously such a mush. BTW – if you’re a fan of the post-apocalypse genre, have you ever read the novel “Swan Song” by Robert R. McCammon? Beautiful, moving book. I read it when I was like 12 and I still think about it. Just FYI!

If you like post-apocalypse fics, another one to try is “Bella Swan: Zombie Killer.” It’s not exactly the apocalypse, but most of the world has become zombies a-la-Zombieland (the movie) and Bella and co. have to fight to stay alive. She doesn’t update very often, but I’ve enjoyed what’s written.

Dammit, was just gonna rec that one – had just copied the link ready to do my rec, and once again I’ve been beaten to it. The Fallout is fantastic, so incredibly well written, and had me in tears on more than one occasion. It went on a long hiatus, but now it’s nearly finished and hopefully will be updated quite quickly as OCD said she had it mostly written.
I’ve got that one on the list but was waiting for her to complete. I just can’t handle any more stories that don’t update for 4ever. Drives me crazee!!
