Ever since Rob started filming Water for Elephants, there’s been lots of mention of The Oscars aka The Academy Awards. The film is being buzzed about and so are the actors, including Rob *cue the surprised face*
If you were Robsessed in Februaray of 2009, coughcoughLIKEMEcoughcough, you will remember Rob’s only appearance at the Oscars…as a presenter. Will he make it there in the next two years as a nominee….I’m not sure…DISCUSS.

An Oscar note….when I was looking up #stalking old boyfriends on Facebook a year ago, I came across the guy who took my virginity. He had pictures posted that showed him working at the 2008 Oscars. Not sure what he did as he’s a TV techie but he was wearing a tux.

I would absolutely love for him to get an Oscar nomination in the next few years. But to be honest, he still is in the beginning of his (hopefully long and successful) career. He himself has said that he is still “trying to learn.” Honestly, I think he’d prefer people not put that Oscar pressure on him. He has so much pressure already. I think he’s a great actor and will one day get a nomination, but its too soon.

Rob cracks me up in these videos when does the sucking in the cheeks move. He does it constantly. I think it’s his go-to-look when he’s nervous. I hadn’t discovered HHH in Feb. 2009, so I missed his epic Oscar appearance. All I have to say is: did you see the size of his shoes in the 3rd video? They’re gigantic. I may have paused it there for say a minute or two, or thirty.
As for him being nominated soon, I think it would be much more likely had he not appeared in Twilight, but you never know. That boy is golden and was definitely born under a lucky star. Everyone loves him, so it wouldn’t surprise me either.
On another note, it’s hotter than heck here in L.A., Rob must still be in town. Why, oh why does this city have to be so big? He’s here, I’m here. When will we find each other?

no kidding about the heat.. I have been trying to plan my trips carefully, I ended up getting a flat tire! at least we were almost home, and when we were going to go out again (and I realized I had been getting one earlier), I first tried to walk to the gas station to get some Fix-A-Flat, but changed my mind after about a block and came home and having the roadside assistance guys come to change the flat, going to the mechanic in the morning to get it replaced before it gets too hot.

Ok, I LOVE the novel WFE and had read it when it came out and many time since. I think if he pulls off the performance he will get a nom. not sure a win but yes a nom!! Bel Ami I am not sure that is an up in the air for me since I haven’t read it or seen anything but stills. It seems like the type of movie that the SAG members like, ya know artsy and different. I can’t wait til he takes home a naked golden man though!!

I think he def has it in him for a stellar performance. WFE was an excellent book, great story but you never really know how a movie is going to turn out. I do know that I am most excited about WFE coming out. I have passed the book around my whole family and they are devouring it like wildfire. I really hope someday he is nominated at least, a win would be a bonus.

Scilla-you need to read this book! I don’t read books much anymore but this is a fabulous read, you can just burn right through it. It’s beautifully written and now you can picture the characters while reading. My mom read it in less than a day. Read a little bit each night, you won’t regret it. When my mom finished the book, I showed her a pic of Rob in character and she said “That’s exactly how I pictured him”
On another note….found out my grandfather rode the rails in the same time period and actually worked for some of these circuses!~~All Roads~~

scilla, I read it on the plane on the way to California, and finished before I landed! Great read, very different. Of course, it helped picturing HHH as Jacob.

Seriously, it was such a great read, although I’m pissed that my younger DD, who read part of it for school, said she couldn’t picture Rob as Jacob because he had red hair in the book or some shizz like that. It’s all about politics though. Sad to say, Rob won’t be nominated for an Oscar until he can stop being called “that guy from Twilight”. He’s far too pretty and far too young. We know he’s more than that, but that’s the general perception out there.
Look at Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp and Leo. They’ve all had varied careers with interesting roles and amazing movies and they still haven’t won anything. Nominated, yes, but never won. They’re too pretty and too famous.
That being said, working with Christoph Waltz and Reese will give him some serious cred as an actor… if he pulls it off.
And if doesn’t pull it off? Yikes. Bye-bye serious acting career.

You’ve made very valid points there SB…and all the men you mentioned have been in the biz for a long while yet.
It certainly isn’t that Rob can’t turn in a stellar Oscar worthy performance, but those that vote on the Oscars may have different viewpoints. Hollywood def has a lot of politics and games to play.
I think most of us have more than enough faith in Robert, but just not with the process.
He will do a dazzling performance! He will be utterly adorable. I loved the book. I laughed and cried. I envisioned him the entire time. Still – Reese is too old for Marlena.
Totally agree with you SB – franchise actors don’t tend to attract oscar nominations. If Rob continues to take interesting character roles and earn his acting stripes with the best in the business then one day he will be in contention. Whilst he’s involved in Twilight that will overshadow all other roles, purely because of the size of the fandom and the media attention it gets. It will take Rob at least 2 or 3 years to shake that off and build his credibility in movies intended for an adult rather than a teenage audience.
Whilst I think the movies he is doing in between Twilight flicks are good, I think they will just be fillers until the real game starts post BD (or BW – good one FluffyLiz).
Right on target jp- Rob has to keep stepping away from the franchise madness of Twilight and take chances on more adult characters. Twilight got him here, but movies like Bel Ami and WFE will keep him here. The most impressive thing is that he’s already got a history for taking roles that he likes and thinks are interesting, he doesn’t accept roles just because he thinks they will be money makers. In the future I think we’re going to see him in many diverse roles. We probably won’t like them all, but he’ll always have my resepect because he does what he wants and puts everything he’s got into them. I say we give him 5-10 years to spread his wings and allow him to mature as an actor before we start whispering “Oscar’ in his ear. If he keeps on his current path, I believe an Oscar win is inevitable. We just need to be patient.

I thought his performance in Remember Me was excellent! Defintely showed me that he has it in him to be a seriously good actor aside from the Twilight hoopla (but I do enjoy Twilight!). I also have enjoyed his pre-Twilight films and thought he did a good job in those. Not Oscar-worthy but nonetheless good acting.
Totally agree with you Terri. RM was fantastic and is now one of my all time favorite dramas. I thought he was great as Tyler and I know that his performance opened up a lot of peoples minds to his acting abilities.

A couple of chapters ago I sent the author a total fangirl review (when Edward’s backstory is told), I just couldn’t help myself. The story is amazing, but emotionally so hard to read. The story makes me want to scream, or cry or puke, or maybe all 3, she’s an amazing storyteller to make you feel such gut clenching emotions! Not for the faint of heart, but SO WORTH IT!!

It’s amazing, but very graphic and painful at times. The writing is fantastic. I’m in total heartfail after the last chappie. She updates very frequently, sometimes twice a week.
Yep, the Robscars will go down in the record books as one of *the* hottest Rob appearances evah. I remember watching with my heart beating in my throat – so excited to see my crush get to have visibility in front of millions… ::le sigh:: I also remember thinking “One day, he’ll be up on that stage for another reason.” Do I think that will be in the next year or two? Ehhhhh….Not so sure about that. Obvs I’m dying to see his work in WFE and BA, and I know if those come out the way we expect, it will be a major boon for HHH. But I still think he might need some more “seasoning” before he gets a nom. But will he get one someday?? Undoubtedly, YES. Why? Because Rob is a fantastic character actor, and he chooses his roles fearlessly. This will allow him to get out there and do things other actors will be too afraid to tackle. He’s said that he felt he could be more fearless back then when nobody knew who he was but I think he’s still got huge big, brass ones (Bel Ami). In both senses of course.
Well, JAG, you’ve asked the $64 million question. Has Rob got a chance of being nominated for either BA or WFE? Hmmm, like Scilla and SwimmingBee, I tend to think that Twilight could well negate any chance he has, unless he turns in absolutely stellar performances. Also, I think it may be optimistic to believe that BA will even get sufficient recognition from the Academy – has a distributor yet been confirmed in America? I think his best chance may be WFE, which is likely to pull a bigger audience, both for Rob’s presence and also Reese, plus it comes off the back of a popular novel and is much more of a crowd-pleaser.
Do I think he’s got the talent to turn in an Oscar-worthy performance? Hell, yes. But, as SwimmingBee points out, the same could be said of Brad, Johnny and Leo (although I believe they’ve all been nominated). Even a nomination would be great – it shows that his talent has been recognised and can be as good as a win as far as directors and producers are concerned when looking to cast actors in future roles – and he needs good roles to be offered to him in order to secure his future after Breaking

I think the further he gets away from the twilight movies the better, and yes I’d love to see him at least get a nomination, so at least he is recognised for his talent and all his hard work. Harry Potter and Twilight may have put him on the map, but roles like Water For Elephants and Bel Ami are what are going to really propel him in the eyes of his peers and with those who truly see him as more than a teen idol.
Even if he doesn’t win an Oscar in the next year or so…Rob will always be a winner with me and fans who really appreciate him and all his talents.

Fluffy, you and SB do make some very good points. The question really has two separate parts to it and therefore can’t really be answered without MANY variables (and cocktails) coming into play.
Believe me, the Academy has already taken notice of him. Major studios do not greenlight pictures based solely on good looks and box-office receipts. WFE is/was a testament to the offerings important Hollywood players feel he is capable of handling. The Academy does not have any hard and fast rules when it comes to nominations of individuals who are/have been attached to huge franchise films, it truly is about the work (and maybe an insanely expensive and clever marketing campaign).
Rob is still learning and growing as an artist and is a highly intelligent and shrewd businessman regarding the trajectory of his career. I would say that the “Oscar talk” more than freaks him out and that although this may be a long term goal/dream for him, it takes no part in his decision process when it comes to future projects.
Having said all of that…..I just really want to bang him. A lot!! Oh, and “Breaking Wind”, ummm that title deserves an Oscar! You are total win!

Is he still thinking about the girl in the crowd as he continues along the Red Carpet – does he wonder if he’ll ever see her again, or wish that he’d had the chance to talk to her? If I had been her, those 18 seconds would fuel a million hours of fantasies from now until I gasp my last breath.

I suspect it will be a while before the Academy will be able to stomach handing out an award to “that Twilight guy” that also happens to be Glamour’s Seciest Man two years running. A nomination, though, is possible and in and of itself would be great. It just depends on the quality of what he was actually doing out there while he was making grandpa pants look fuckhawt, which none of us knows. I think he has it in him, but whether or not he’s amped up his game in the past year just remains to be seen. So I have to reserve judgment until April. If nothing else, though, I strongly suspect that WFE will be far and away the best performance he has delivered thus far. I also think he probably learned alot during the process that will help him get that nomination later even if it doesn’t happen now.

I dunno, I put very little stock in these things…I rarely enjoy Oscar laden movies unless Leo has a starring role. I would love him to be nominated, that would be enough but I think it will be a long time before they will actually give him an award…stuffy shower of bastards that they are.
I think he will kill it in WFE, I can’t wait. Plenty of wonderful actors have never taken home a statue and never will but it doesn’t affect them so I’m not worried if it doesn’t happen. Most of my favourite actors have been snubbed time and time again.
You’re right, of course, BLARL. I think of Paul Newman, who was one of my favourite actors when I was young (really, just one of the most beautiful men of his generation). He was a fantastic actor and was nominated 8 times before he finally won for Color of Money, his 9th nomination. Then you look at actors of the calibre of Richard Burton, Orson Welles, John Malkovich, Edward Norton, Albert Finney, Peter O’Toole …. the list goes on …. who have never won, and you realise that it’s not just about talent.

The list of amazingly talented individuals that have been snubbed by the Academy, and particularly those who have been snubbed because they won’t play the game, is long and distinguished. Some of the foremost actors of the last 3 or 4 generations count themselves top of it. And, we also know that Rob tends to march to the beat of his own band. One of the reasons we love him so much is that he doesn’t play the game. If, in the end, his personal integrity means he never gets a little gold naked dude holding a sword, I can make myself okay with it. Would it be fantastic and an amazing honor. Of course. Does Rob have both the stones and the amazing talent to pull it off? Many times over. But, again, I value his integrity over some stuffy bastard’s opinion of him. The lovely thing, of course, is so does he.

I’m still incredibly steamed about just how badly Remember Me got shared by Scummit and the critics, who couldn’t recognize a non-formula, quality movie if their lives depended on it, and actually their livelihoods do. ToR featured an article this morning deconstructing RM that is the most insightful and intelligent I’ve read yet. I urge everyone to read this. Personally, I think Rob’s already given an Oscarworthy performance as Tyler…every damn emotion described in that article shone through in Rob’s depiction IMO.

Rob did a phenominal job with this complicated character and I respect him so much for taking the chance on this “small film” (his words not mine).

Rob totes deserves that Oscar – I hope WFE does it for him but even if it doesn’t he’s such an amazing actor that I really feel its just a matter of time.
Well….personally I think the tentative release dates of these two movies will make it difficult at best for any award recognition. If they are released early next year, as I’m hearing, they miss this award year and are very early in the next. Films released in the spring are usually long forgotten by the time the noms come out the next year. It’s a sad fact.
I also hate to put this kind of pressure on any film. That’s kind of what happened to Remember Me. Don’t get me wrong, I loved that movie. But I think the unrealistic expectations hurt it in the long run. I’m just looking forward to another great Rob film where he continues to amaze us with his talent….and his gorgeousness. I do believe that we haven’t even seen what Rob is capable of on the screen. He will get that award. No doubt…just not yet.
Just my honest opinion….
I agree. Too much pressure and I don’t think an Oscar nom or even win has the same cachet it once did – so I don’t care much. There’s also so many other awards out there that don’t have the pretension of the Academy Awards and, I believe, more weight within the actual movie-making community. All that aside, I would love to see him at the ceremony and with WFE coming out in April he might be there to promote it as a presenter. SQUEE!!

I mean Johnny Depp is a versatile awesome actor and I do so love Captain Jack, but he’s done a lot of great stuff. I also remember when Leo was nominated for Gilbert Grape and didn’t win. I mean he was fantastic in that movie.

OK…so I have a friend in Hollywood (the one who got me into the Eclipse Premiere). He is good friends with the writer for Water for Elephants and when I was out in LA, he said that his friend told him that Rob “was going to be a really big star”…hmmmmmmmmm. They really like him. REALLY like him alot. More than they expected to…”after Twilight”…
So, my theory is that if Rob stays the charming boy that he is, stays as serious about EVERY part he gets, and gets lucky to get those magical parts that put you in the position to even be nominated he will get an Oscar someday.
This theory is based on my cynicism about Oscar himself ladies (#losselyusedterm) As sad as this may be to say the Oscars are thought to be about talent…and they are…but they are also truly about luck, timing and POPULARITY (and POLITICS, dare I say it????) and Rob has ALL of that in spades…and his PERSONALITY is taking him a long, long way in Hollywood…

I think I agree with a lot of you, at this stage in his career and his life the pressure of an Oscar would be tough for Rob. Maybe a Golden Globe nom to warm him up. I think an Oscar nod would be easier for him to handle in a few more years…however if the performances warrant it then I guess we’ll see.
I think Bel Ami is a long shot for any noms but maybe WFE? who knows. It will be interesting to watch it unfold.

As for Oscar chances, I am sure the boy has it in him, but the Academy and Hollywood in general is so dicey on what is good and what isn’t. I know some stuff that has been nominated and won, I have thought that it just sucks, and stuff that is awesome has gotten major badgering. I also worry because of the reception “Remember Me” got from the critics.
I think I will have to wait and see how the movies in general (Water for Elephants and Bel Ami) get accepted by the Big Wigs. I think he could definitely get some noms, maybe Golden Globes, Oscars, SAG Awards, I would love him to get some nods from anything other than the Teenie bopper awards.
It’s still early in his career though, he has time, and I know he could do it, I think it just depends more on the atmosphere of the time, rather than if he really deserves it or not.
That being said, he already holds the golden statue in my heart always. #cheesy
I’d like to see Bel Ami show-cased at Cannes next year – thus ensuring some more exquisite RivieraRob moments, plus he could then be in the running for a Palme d’or award – to my mind, a far more prestigious award than the highly partisan Oscars. I’ve heard that what and who wins is very much dependant upon which studio has lavised the best gifts on Academy members.

Great post JAG. This is a subject which is near and dear to my heart because I want the validation for HHH (as much as actors say they don’t care about it, they do, and so does the industry, because it confers both respect and opportunity) and for the world in general (and those idiot critics) to stop dismissing him as “that Twilight guy” and acknowledge what we’ve all known for a very long time. He’s a genuine, Grade A talent and a true original, and they don’t come along that often (Fluffy, loved the Paul Newman comparison for looks and chops!) The industry needs to start giving him the respect he deserves.
This hoor’s two cents, similar to what a lot of you are saying — it’s probably going to take a while for the Twi madness to die down before Hollywood takes him seriously as an actor. Does he have the serious acting chops? FML of COURSE he does. But he doesn’t have the street cred yet with Hollywood — and those damn Oscars are 90% political BS most of the time.
He’s going to have to do what Brad Pitt, Leo, Johnny all did — move away from the pretty boy/romantic/teen idol roles and do serious muthaf*ucking risky stuff. THAT gets you street cred in Hollywood and THAT gets Oscar noms and wins. (And am I the only one who wants to see a remake of “Giant” with HHH in the James Dean role? OMFG, hobo alert there!)
Personally, I would fluv for him to get a nom for WFE because that would smack Hollywood upside the head big time but realistically I don’t see it happening. And because HHH in a tux knocks me off the planet (see Tuxgasms) I sure as shizz will be watching whenever he’s strutting that fine stuff on the red carpet (*mopping up drool*).

Anywho, I’m with many of you in I think the Oscars are all, for the most part, political Hollywood BS. And, of course, one of the many many many many many reasons why we love HHH is his complete disdain for Hollywood’s political BS. So, that roughly translates into the road to Oscarville being a long one for Rob.
Do I think he has the stones and the downright talent to do it? Fuck yes I do. And if you don’t
what the fuck are you doing hereI’m sorry but you’re pretty much blind, deaf and beyond stupid. Where I disagree just a bit is the effect The Saga will have on the journey. I think Rob’s portrayal of Edward actually truly reflects the talent he possesses in huge amounts. Yes, the franchise itself, no matter what, is always going to be panned bypimple-assed no-talent motherf*ckers who can’t do anything constructive so they spend their time bagging on the genuinely talentedcritics. But, people who pay attention to performance can see and understand, even without the understanding of what happens in the books, ie what drives most of Rob’s characterization of Edward, the intensity, emotion, psychology and understanding that he brings to the role. It would be incredibly easy for him to Efron in a performance here, to stay on the surface without digging any deeper, to just play Edward as the hottest man on Earth who doesn’t want to want the girl but ends up with her anyways. He’s never done that, ever. Just as with Dali, just as with Daniel, just as with Tyler, Rob challenges himself to see what makes the character tick, what gives him the darkness, and goes there to be able to portray it. Is it going to win him any awards other than MTV’s and TCA’s. No. But obviously, it’s caught the eye of some people in the know. Rob wouldn’t have gotten the chances he has over the last 2 1/2 years if it hadn’t. So, no, the Academy (and likely the FPA) will not want to give the award to “the guy from Twilight”. But, it’s really the mainstream media that are keeping that buzz alive. In the many of the right circles, he stopped being that a few exits back.So, bottom line, do I think he’ll win for WfE or BA? Highly unlikely. But not because he didn’t give a f*ckall amazing performance. But, for many other factors like release timing (WfE won’t be up for consideration until the 2012 Oscars almost 10 months AFTER it’s release), small markets, inadequate promotion (again BA not on any major festival lists yet, even European ones) and all sorts of other things. If the Oscars were, in fact, truly about the best performance, Rob would be a lead-pipe lock.

Totes agree with you about how he nails Edward (yes, and please!), and yet it gets lost in the general dismissal of the Twi-series as a superficial, just for teens, pop culture franchise. Grr. But you’re dead on…the reason why he can answer those interview questions about the character in such depth and with such insight is precisely because he has put so much thought into what makes the character tick before attempting to portray him. Rob is the polar opposite of a lazy actor *coughEfroncough*.
The other point I meant to make earlier is that even if he personally doesn’t get an Oscar nod for WFE, I am ready to go out on the limb right here and now and say I believe the film itself will get nominated for Best Picture and there may be other noms as well (Reese and Christoph), so I think he will benefit enormously from the attention given to an Oscar-nominated film. I think it will force some who never took him seriously to re-evaluate their opinions, and I believe his performance will support a turning of the tide in this respect.
