FluffyLiz- Ah ha! Ok, that takes care of one of my concerns, this past weekend my computer got infected with several viruses, and the only places I had been were here, Fanfiction Net and Twilighted. They were easy to clean up as I have “Counter Spy” on my machine. But it was annoying. I get really ticked off when you press to go someplace over there and they take you someplace else and you have to backtrack and start all over again. I should have known some of those unsolicited pop-ups had trojans. The main was I got attacks your E-mail and sends out spam uder your name.

Here’s what the jazz sax player Coleman Hawkins sounds like whom Rob says he likes the jazz music of. A little too much wobble in his vibrato for MY taste (this was a STYLE early on for sax players that was eventually thought of as kind of hokey)…but it was THE style of playing back in the 30′s. If you don’t believe me, listen to the soundtracks of old 30′s swing type musicals. BUT, hey, if he likes him, he likes him so I’m sharing the music here. I PREFER hipper players like John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz (whom I think ROB WOULD LOVE because he ALSO has that SEXY HUSKY SOUND but without the hokey vibrato) AND because STAN GETZ liked playing brazilian bossa music as well.
ANYWAY, here’s COLEMAN HAWKINS playing “ANGEL FACE”. I like this song. But I like EVEN MORE a song that was one of Colman Hawkin’s most popular recordings of a song called “BODY AND SOUL”. I LOVE that song. Sexy! GAH

Here’s Filo Machado……playing a faster Bossa Nova. He does what’s known as SCATTING and he SCATS EXACTLY WITH THE SOLO HE IS PLAYING ON THE GUITAR NOTE FOR NOTE. Guitarist/singer from America: George Benson used to do that as well. Some of the songs on Filo Machado’s site don’t reflect what he does….so I’m including him LIVE here. Little low in volume, but you’ll get the idea what a BOSSA NOVA is. This one is a little faster a Bossa Nova though. There’s a song called: “GIRL FROM IPANEMA” which is the most POPULAR bossa nova song ever made popular in the states. THAT’s the normal tempo for a Bossa Nova in the classic tradition. This guy just is so talented. NOT MANY PEOPLE can do what he’s doing here.
I tried like SHIT to find the CD that’s mentioned in that article that Rob said he bought called: “BOSSA NOVA BOSSA”. I think they must have printed or translated it wrong as I can find no band with that exact name on Amazon, or iTunes or anywhere listed on the net on Google. It might be “Bossa NovaBossa” or backwards like “NovaBossaNova”….I don’t know. By the way, Coleman Hawkins is a GREAT jazz sax player and his playing is great….all I meant was that his VIBRATO is a style in early early jazz and I like a different vibrato than his style of vibrato. But his sexy style and playing is great.

pjsnurse…..OH MAN “THE NAT KING COLE TRIO” was fucking incredible. Nat King Cole was a great singer, but I hated when they wasted him by making him be a STAND UP SINGER with a band behind him because it was his PIANO PLAYING and his TRIO that made him noticed. He didn’t even sing when he first began music performing. Story goes: “At the Swanee Inn in Los Angeles that a lush in the audience demanded that Nat sing the guy’s favorite song: “Sweet Lorraine”. Nat said: “we don’t sing”. The guy summoned the manager and the manager said “SING because this guy is a big spender, sometimes three bucks a night”. And Nat was forced to sing “Sweet Lorraine”. So he never even wanted to be a singer. “THE NAT KING TRIO” was where his real jazz chops and talent were. Nat sang a few really hokey songs, but his early “Nat King Cole” trio kicked fucking ass. DIANA KRALL started off her career doing an album with a guitar player, upright bass and her on piano/singing that were all Nat King Cole TRIO tunes. DIANA KRALL pretty much based her career on “The Nat King Cole TRIO” and you hear it in her playing and style.
I’ll share a little story since it’s 3am and I can’t sleep…
One night in New Orleans when I was ummm 19 so that was 2001…my friends and I were wandering around the french quarter drinking frozen hurricanes and we wandered a little off the beaten path to a club called (and I ain’t lying) The Funky Butt. So we went in and guess who was playing that night:

So the next day we found another club and danced all afternoon to this kind of music:

Director CLINT EASTWOOD is really HEAVILY into jazz big time. He’s done movies about it (a movie about the life of Charlie Parker)…and lots of documentaries as well. This clip was in one of the documentaries Clint put together.
THIS IS “THE NAT KING COLE TRIO”. You’ll see they had to sing a kind of “novelty” song, but if you actually listen to the musicianship of the song, you will see they are just SO MUCH BETTER than the song itself. That was just the times…..novelty songs were big back then. But Nat was a REALLY FINE JAZZ PIANO PLAYER and I still would rather hear him play piano for himself when he sings. I feel the same way about Diana Krall as well. To me she’s a pianist who sings, not a stand up alone singer. She phrases her singing better when she plays the piano AS SHE SINGS. OK OK I KNOW, THIS ISN’T ABOUT ROB.

rpgirl27….yeah NEW ORLEANS has some great music. Different kind of jazz…more dixieland than bebop, but it’s ALL THERE as that’s a music town for fuck sure. Blues as well and everything else LIVE there as well. Just walking the streets of New Orleans you can hear some of the best music ANY WHERE. That’s why when the hurricane hit, so many New Orleans musicians were left in deep shit and some even lost their horns to the damage. Many dispersed around the country, but came back because there’s NO PLACE in america like NEW ORLEANS. It’s just has a culture/lifestyle unto itself.
MARSALIS family kicks ass. ALL OF THEM. I like to watch Jazz at Lincoln Center on PBS. Some great jazz performed and Wynton Marsalis is musical director for that jazz program. He has gone all over america trying to teach kids about JAZZ music as all of those musicians are dying off and he’s trying to keep THE FIRST MUSIC THAT WAS TRULY AMERICAN MUSIC alive.
REGARDING ROB AND HIS LOVE OF MUSIC…..we all know Rob likes to go to OUT OF THE WAY PUBS and BARS that are dark and cozy and not frequented by the hip and beautiful. It’s not JUST for his privacy that he does this. Sometimes, some of those DIVES as we like to call them have THE BEST LIVE MUSIC ANYWHERE. You all should check out live music in your towns all over the world. Some of the sleaziest dives and pubs can have some AMAZING MUSICIANS that are famous around the world playing there. And some great LOCAL musicians often end up playing in DIVES. We all have to EAT. So SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC like Rob does. Support REAL MUSICIANS. Rob would love you for it. He does….look how he supports his Brit Pack musician friends. He NEVER MISSES if he’s in the area….he’s always there to support them. YOU DO THE SAME….support HIS friends and live musicians everywhere. LIVE GIGS are becoming fewer and fewer everywhere and it’s fucking sad.

I absolutely agree with you Debbo… not enough people are going out to see live music anymore. I have a few friends who love going to see local bands play and sometimes I get extremely frustrated by the people in the bar. Most of the them ignore the musician completely, not bothering to acknowledge the fact that they’re putting themselves out there and standing in a room full of people and sometimes baring their heart and soul. The other night, I was with some friends at our local and there was this guy playing who was just ah-mazing! Soulful voice… I would describe his music as “modern acoustic folk rock” but he also played a wide variety including blues and rock. While technically he is a one-man band, playing a six-string and using onstage live-recording technology, I would put him on par with full-piece bands! Anyway, I digress….
The asshats in the bar were barely paying attention, and my friends and I were completely captivated by the music when these drunk frat boys decided that we looked bored and could use some entertainment. WTF??! Suffice to say we patted them on the head and sent them on their way.
It just burns me that people can be so oblivious and unappreciative of others talents and the hard work they put into them. Even if the type of music is not my thing or even that good… I always try to show my appreciation and acknowledge that they have put themselves out there. Anyway, getting off my soapbox now!
That’s definitely one of the things I appreciate about Rob, his unfailing support of his friends’ music. No matter how crazy things are for him he still shows up to see them play, trying his best to go unnoticed and watching the shows from back stage. Not just for the sake of his privacy, so that the focus of the audience stays on them and not on him. As if he needs any MORE good qualities to make us love him even more…

What a sweet post and that’s about the way it is for live music any more. Some places even leave the sports channels playing on a TV while musicians perform. It’s so sad. People take live musicians for granted.

There was a “SAMBA” cd that I found at my public library a long time ago and it’s a compilation CD so some songs you might like and others you won’t like at all, but it’s REALLY a cool variety of different types of traditional sambas by various artists. I WISH I had a copy, but after much looking, I found it on AMAZON, although it can only be bought from other places at this point, BUT you can hear samples of THAT ALBUM on Amazon. Such HAPPY MUSIC-sambas. Go hear the samples for free…..some you’ll like, others maybe not, but listen…it’s HAPPY music that makes you feel good.

About that CD “SAMBA!” URL just above….my favorite is the first cut which is legendary american jazz singer “NINA SIMONE” singing a samba in portuguese. REMEMBER, that album is TRADITIONAL SAMBAS….so they will sound hokey to a lot of you, but I just wanted you to get a FEEL….for what the traditional samba is like. They’ve actually got A LOT of NEW SAMBA music available on Amazon as well that’s modern and hipper sounding. Sambas won’t go away, at least not in Brasil. If I try to save these and change the file name, it doesn’t work. I get a picture with a flat line in the middle like it’s compressed. Maybe I need to use Internet Explorer? Update on my virus from Fanfic.net.
The program installed was a
(av.exe (ROGUE.Win7Antispyware2010)
Program Manager can unistall this but the rogue program leaves registry entries so it can reinstall itself. I used a great free program called Malwarebytes.. I found this to be the best software so far, 6 registry entries were found and deleted.
On doing a Google search I found that fanfic.net is full of viruses at this time.. so be careful girls.
